Calcite (Twinned) on Fluorite (Illustrated)
Choice cluster of two generations of Calcite clustered together and perched on stepped, translucent purple Fluorite. The first generation of Calcite consists of a translucent, straw-colored twinned Calcite 2.5 cm across, intergrown with a single scalenohedron. The second generation of honey-colored Calcites are gemmy and lustrous and perched on the sides, with the largest crystal being 2.5 cm and doubly-terminated. You rarely see so dramatic a combination of two calcite styles from these mines, together. Mined in 1992, this was also illustrated in the Mineralogical Record's Illinois-Kentucky Fluorite Districtissue, V. 28, P. 30, Fig. 47. A choice, attractive specimen that is highly representative of these combinations. RCL 1369
