A fantastic plate Pyrite on Calcite from China and it's easy to see why these artistic combination pieces have been nicknamed "Mercedes" Calcites! During crystal formation, the calcites formed first with Pyrite nucleating on the terminal crystal face edges, where it naturally formed these glittering accents on the Calcite crystals. The Calcite crystals are off-white to pale gray with an attractive almost pearly luster on the interior of some and are up to 1.5 cm across. The area around Chenzhou, in Hunan, China, has produced quite a wealth of Calcite and Pyrite combinations and this Mercedes style is exemplary! 2018 finds.
