Calcite with Hematite
Stunning, robust with multiple orange and yellow hues, this scalenohedral (dog-tooth) Calcite crystal from Santa Eulalia, Mexico is super attractive! The main Calcite crystal is just shy of 4 inches in length with a luxurious honey-yellow color throughout and a glassy luster. The crystal is transparent to translucent with a barely discernible internal phantom and there are highlights of vivid burnt orange patches (presumably hematite) on the front that are just below the surface and enhance the unusual aesthetics! The crystal is perfectly terminated. There is a smaller scalenohedral Calcite to the left of the main crystal that has similar characteristics; however, the tip is cleanly severed. The back of both crystals have a coating of goethite-hematite that is sprinkled with tiny, glistening Calcite crystals that add to the distinction of the piece. An old specimen from the Dick Heck Mexican collection. This is old material from the 1980s. Dick was a specialist in Mexican and Illinois material, and I knew him growing up in the Midwest in the 1980s. He was always known for his superb taste in condition and aesthetics.
