Pingtouling's 2003-2004 Mimetite discovery rocked the collecting community. The gemmy, well-formed, and superbly lustrous crystals from these pockets have a fantastic and beautiful and look to them, and compare favorably in terms of sheer quality to the great Tsumeb Mimetites of the 1970's. Each of these burnt-orange, hexagonal crystals is like a polished jewel, and they cover just enough of the matrix to look balanced without overwhelming. The pics are good, but they simply cannot adequately convey just how great these crystals are. Pingtouling Mimetites have equaled or exceeded the best the world has produced from other localities, and these fiery, prismatic crystals are a choice example of this famous find. And sadly, none to match have been found since, especially with the mine now flooded.
