Exceptional pocket of unusually well-preserved, sharp Azurite crystals with Malachite and a white unknown, possibly Calcite (hydrozincite?), all in a heavy gossan matrix. The deep blue Azurites have very good luster, the blue 'fire' that you always hope with good lighting, and a sharp, attractive chisel habit. The iridescent Malachite and the white unknown add interest and eye appeal. Additional info per collector, Les Presmyk: "The Sacramento Shaft (underground mine) is different from the Sacramento Pit. The underground mine operated from the 1890s until 1910 or so. The Sacramento Pit started operations in the 1920s and lasted for about 10 years. This pit was later engulfed by the Lavender Pit, although I believe part of Sacramento Hill still may exist. Since the label says Sacramento Shaft the piece was probably collected prior to 1900." An old, important classic with very good aesthetics, this is the best Azurite specimen of this particular odd style with sharp crystals I have seen from the Sacramento Shaft, although of course the mine was abundant and produced many styles of fine azurite over years (some of which are sadly lost to time!). Much better in person.
