Manganite
Black minerals are often dismissed by many collectors, but the Ilfeld Manganites are one of those species of black minerals that set a standard for beauty and brilliance that stand with any other species. These old finds, from the late 1880's in Germany, are by far the best examples of the species and the most desirable to collectors (see Bancroft's book Gem & Crystal Treasures for more on this famous find). This dramatic plate has dozens of columnar crystals with superb luster and classic terminations. This specimen has exemplary quality and aesthetics combined with incredible luster. This comes with an additional label from the Joanneum Museum (founded in 1811). Much better in person, as these are hard to photograph.
