Elbaite (“rubellite”) tourmaline crystal with albite, 10 cm, from the Pala Chief mine, Chief Mountain near Pala, San Diego County, California. The mine was opened in 1903 and for the next ten years it was the world’s leading source of gem spodumene crystals. The mine has also yielded some beautiful tourmaline crystals like this one; fine tourmaline and spodumene are rarely found in the same pegmatites in California (see Fisher, 2002).
