Calcite is omnipresent at Santa Eulalia, and calculating how many thousands of tons of Calcite came out of the district is impossible. Santa Eulalia is a Carbonate Replacement Deposit resulting in a tremendous amount of mobilization and re-deposition of Calcite within the district. Pockets abound, yet certain characteristic set zones and pockets apart. Typically, scalenohedral crystals accompany primary mineralization, while rhombohedral and polymorphic crystals are associated with later stages of deposition. Limpid, blocky, twinned crystals like this one associated manganese and iron oxides are known to come from the Zinc Orebody. Late-stage “fugitive” Calcite, like this one, display brilliant bright red fluorescence. This specimen has some dings and contact on the front of the crystal, but incredible luster and clarity — an interesting example of this particular style from Santa Eulalia.
