Ethiopia is well known for its quality Opals, in particular White Opals and Crystal Opals. This oblong nodule is a choice example of solid "Crystal Opal" as it is often called...even though it is amorphous and not crystalline by normal mineral standards. Light honey-colored and completely GEMMY, it almost looks like two generations of Opal with the outer layer of each generation having a 'cracked glass' appearance. The core zone is quite unusual, as in 'why on Earth is it there?’, and in general morphology it seems like those Opal nodules that have formed around bone, the central zones being so similar in shape and size. But of course, this is an Opal, and moving the polished end under light creates a moderate series of neon-green and multicolored flashes that extend down through the Opal as if it were an aquarium with neon fish. There is even a touch of bright orange to add a bit more color. This is an excellent Crystal Opal with an unusual core and glassy features that make it rather unique. Better in person, even. A very nice complete nodule from modern era finds, probably around 2010-15, as this was in a Chinese collection for some time. Just over 80 grams in mass.
