This is an excellent and classic Matlockite miniature from the type locality of Matlock, Derbyshire, UK; and there is a late 1800s-era Foote Mineral Company label attached to the piece! This material from this location, from a small place and a brief time, remains world's best of species. This piece shows off a fantastic and large (for the species), 2.1 cm group of very pale yellow-ish Matlockite crystals perched near the top of the matrix, which is almost entirely Galena. Most specimens we have seen survive are off matrix - although I admit that I have perhaps only seen a dozen or so in over 40 years in minerals. They are seldom for sale. The crystal cluster is an elegant grouping of stout crystals to just over 1 cm and the crystals form is distinct bowtie shape. Matlockite is a very rare lead fluorochloride mineral, and the best of species comes from this type locality...we should say "came" from this locality in the early to mid-1800s. It is in perfect condition and comes with a custom engraved acrylic base. Matlockite was first published in 1851: Greg, R.P. (1851) A description of Matlockite, a new oxychloride of lead. As a final note, as of 2026 when I write this, it has been a decade since the last good Matlockite we have had...this being clearly one of the rarest of old British classics.
