Volborthite has one of the intense deep olive-green colors in the mineral world as can be seen in this excellent thumbnail from the Milpillas Mine in Mexico. Volborthite, formerly known as microcrystals from some few localities, now (as of 2015 or so) exists as large crystals from Milpillas! However, this zone of the mine has come and gone; and these few small pockets are now modern classics. No more has been found in many years. Volborthite is a copper vanadate hydrate and this piece happens to be a very good and very three-dimensional cluster for the species, with the main crystal at 2.2 cm across. The crystals are sharp, lustrous and sparkling as they form a green rosette. The find here at the Milpillas Mine in 2015-17 represents the best-of-species for the mineral ever found. Finds at other worldwide localities consisted mostly of microcrystals. The large and colorful crystals of Volborthite here are so sharp and lustrous that it is hard to believe what they are! An exceptional thumbnail Volborthite from a time and place that likely will not be repeated.
