Wow! This is an amazingly gemmy and lustrous, intense cherry-red Cinnabar specimen from the Red Bird Mine in Nevada - an American origin cinnabar of quality enough to challenge Chinese specimens in the size range! In a vertical orientation, the bright crimson crystals are stacked one upon the other and are just stunning with their gemmy red interiors and lustrous exteriors. All of the crystals appear to be twinned and range in size from 7 mm to 1.1 cm and the contrast with the contrast with the tan to white matrix is just excellent. Just a striking specimen from a very uncommon, old locale in Nevada. This find was collected by field collector Martin Jensen (prior to the 2000s), and later sold into the Robert (Bob) Reynolds collection that we purchased. Bob was curator at the San Bernardino County Museum. For an American cinnabar, or a USA miniatures collector, it seems hard to believe but it is true (most were thumbnails, which were sold by others in the Jensen thumbnail collection). We have had a handful of these over the years, as you can see on old archives at MineralAuctions.com - none even close to this quality.
