Pentagonite is one of the most beautiful minerals in nature, for its saturated color and dramatic form, when they get big. However, they are fragile and seldom extracted in large specimens, much less preserved. This is a complete geode or pocket of crystals formed in a lava bubble, nearly 100 million years ago when India slammed into Asia! It preserves these delicate yet robust clusters of crystals and is a miracle of survival. Fabulous deep blue color and superb geometry highlight these stunning clusters of sharp Pentagonite blades. Pentagonite is a dimorph of Cavansite, and this excellent and large small-cabinet specimen is from the famous Wagholi Quarries within the Deccan Plateau (which produce, by far, best of species). These sprays are set in an undulating vug lined with starkly contrasting snow-white Mordenite, all in a matrix of well-prepared, sawed basalt. The largest Pentagonite is a Christmas tree-like cluster a full 4 cm tall, or a bit more. It is extremely dramatic and fully displayed. By itself, this one cluster would make for a quality specimen, but the additional Pentagonites elevate this specimen into the 'special' category; and all while nestled in a pocket that keeps this from being destroyed in handling. There are a few mm-size Calcites among the blades, which is a desired association when found. Easily the world's finest examples of this rare silicate come from Wagholi and this is an impressive combination. With encroachment having closed all Cavansite locations, there is almost no more predicted future mining (we have seen video and photos, showing only about 80 meters of mining left in the edges of the existing deposit, even aside from encroachment by urban buildings). A superb piece, and a rare "pocket" of intact crystals that we can hold, handle, transport. Nevertheless, we prefer hand delivery on this piece, if possible.
