Tanzanite, one of the loveliest of the gem minerals, is a variety of Zoisite that comes from a very limited area of the Merelani Hills. This large crystal is lustrous and interestingly-terminated with a complex castle-like series of steps and crenellations atop; and the upper half is quite gemmy. This particular specimen has been heat-treated to help bring out the lavenders and blues, and to increase the gemminess. Heating drives out browns and reds, a common practice in the gem trade and acceptable with specimens when disclosed and adjusted in price. Combine the luster, color, and alpine-looking termination, and you have a very attractive specimen. With specimen production virtually locked up and diminishing at the mines, Tanzanites of any good quality are highly sought-after and this is a fine, sparkling piece for the size and price point. 49 grams.
