Semi lustrous cubic crystals of galena to 1.0 in size across a chert matrix with dark red crystallized sphalerite. In good condition.The Picher Field, located within the Tri-State Mining District of northeastern Oklahoma and southeastern Kansas, is one of the most historically significant lead and zinc mining regions in the United States. Commercial extraction began with the discovery of the major ore bodies in 1913 and expanded rapidly, peaking during the World Wars to supply critical metals for industrial and military needs before operations ceased late in the twentieth century. Geologically, the ore deposits are Mississippi Valley-Type deposits hosted within the Mississippian-aged Boone Formation, primarily consisting of cherty limestones and dolostones. Mineralization occurred as metal-bearing hydrothermal fluids circulated through tectonic fractures, solution breccias, and karst cavities, depositing galena and sphalerite along with gangue minerals such as calcite, dolomite, and marcasite.
