A grouping of large colorless mostly gemmy cubic fluorite crystals measuring to 3.0 cm on edge set up on a calcite matrix. Minor pyrite is present. In good condition.The Gaskins Mine, located in Pope County, Illinois, is part of the historic Illinois-Kentucky Fluorspar District. Historically, the mine contributed to the region's prominent role as a major domestic source of fluorite, sphalerite, and barite for industrial applications during the twentieth century. Geologically, the deposit is situated within faulted Paleozoic sedimentary strata influenced by nearby intrusive structures such as the Hicks Dome. Mineralization developed as fluorine-bearing and metal-rich hydrothermal solutions migrated along tectonic fractures and fault zones, replacing host limestones and depositing crystalline fluorite that is chemically and aesthetically distinct due to minor trace elements and characteristic phantoms.
