The vast majority of Colorado’s finest amazonites come from the area around Crystal Peak in Teller County. The Smoky Hawk Mine and the Two Point Claim are amongst the most famous localities for world-class amazonite and smoky quartz combos. This specimen, however, comes from neighboring El Paso County, near the base of Pikes Peak. Sentinel Rock is an old-time locality, notable for smoky quartz. In 1885, George Frederick Kunz described Sentinel Rock as Colorado’s “richest area for quartz” – with crystals up to 4 feet being reported in the 1800s.
