Gorgeous shades of blue highlight this cut and polished slice of Larimar, which is the trade and variety name given to the light blue, massive Pectolite from the Dominican Republic. This variety of Pectolite is thought to be colored blue by copper, and often there are tiny traces of copper in the rim of matrix surrounding the Larimar. This slice is actually a petrified stem of a cycad. In fact, many pieces of rough Larimar (those of this particular patterned style only) are found as what appear to be replacements of fossil cycad stems that had been overrun by a pyroclastic flow. The actual name "Larimar" is a combination of "Larissa", which was the name of the daughter of Dominican geologist, Miguel Mendez who originally named the material, and "Mar", which is the Spanish word for sea, as it resembles the crystal blue Caribbean Sea. This material is only found in one place in the world, and is becoming increasingly popular among collectors, jewelers and dealers. Weighing 76 grams, the beauty of the piece is further enhanced when you see the satin spar-like shimmer in the Larimar as you move the piece under light. It is simply mesmerizing and elegant. Ex. Eric Fritz was the Gem-A consulting gemologist and outreach coordinator at gem shows all over the world, and built a systematic gem and lapidary object collection. Rock was an insane mineral collector and world traveler who generally collected minerals but would occasionally pick up fine lapidary material, such as this polished slice.
