This large-cabinet piece is a large, sparkling, sculptural example of the highly-etched, fantastical-shaped Aquamarines that made this old find in Pedra Azul so unique. First found in the 1960s within clay pockets, another large find was last seen in the early 1990s (from which we believe this came). They are legendary and special for the surreal forms and sparkle of the pastel-blue Aquamarine. While such intricately-formed Aquamarine does come from Pakistan today, in smaller sizes, it is nothing of the complexity and overall surreal shape we see in these old classics. The shades of blue are lovely, and the heavy solution-etching results in fractal and complex patterns that are quite intriguing. The growth patterns (dissolution rather than etching, technically) also creates lusters that range from glassy to frosted, which accents the color in various ways and adds to the allure. They have a unique beauty to them, probably best captured by the human eye in person, as they look like ice sculptures more than anything else. Many collectors in fact refer to this style as "blue ice". Specimens of this size seldom turn up on the market, and this aesthetic and substantial piece comes in at 497 grams - more than one pound! From an old collection. Note - the piece can sit on its own to display horizontally or, it can be mounted for a dramatic vertical angle of display, as well.
