Some minerals must be seen in person to be fully appreciated. Photos cannot do justice to such subtle detail as we see in this garnet association piece. These uniquely formed spessartine garnet specimens came out in the late 1990s into the early 2000s. However, although there were many, few had any matrix association or (as in this case) quartz association. The quartz crystal here acts as a nucleus around which hang the two transparent, glittering crystals of garnet, each with their own fanciful patterning and bright color. The piece is complete all around, pristine, and can be oriented any number of directions. We have only seen a handful of such specimens, likely all from one find, in decades since this discovery. Such specimens with association, vibrant color, and good aesthetics, may be limited to a mere handful. The patterning is due to dissolution effects, although often inaccurately referred to as "etching" or "etch patterns," as this is what they do indeed resemble. A perfect miniature with style, we found in an older collection built in Tokyo.
