Tucson, Arizona, USAYaogangxian mine in Yizhang County, Hunan Province has been one of the most productive sites for fine mineral specimens in China over the past two decades. Primarily a tin-tungsten deposit, this high-temperature style of mineralization has also produced magnificent glassy Fluorite cubes in a variety of colours. Here though, we have a superb crystallized specimen of one of the ore minerals - Ferberite (iron tungstate). Forming a lovely aesthetic group of extremely well-formed and damage-free, glossy, black, parallel bladed crystals. At 7.5 cm in length, the longest crystal is a very prominent size for display. On the rear, a coating of small, somewhat flattened Quartz crystals, small golden Chalcopyrite crystals and hexagonal plates of Muscovite mica cover much of the Ferberite but on the front the display face is almost entirely Ferberite in a wonderful, tapering stepped arrangement of bladed crystals. The edges of these crystals are really sharp for Ferberite, and natural parallel linear grooves running up the bladed crystal faces produce an attractive shimmering reflection of light. A really super crystallized Ferberite, perfect for display. Ex Martin Kershaw Collection, no. 952.
