Tucson, Arizona, USAA beautiful, tactile, 'bubbly' mass of dense Hematite iron ore from the West Cumberland Iron Field, in northern England, of the variety called 'Kidney Ore' for obvious reasons. People often question whether this mineral is natural because of its 'otherworldly' appearance. Well, yes, this form is natural, but those as bright and reflective as this one have unusually been gently cleaned or lightly polished to remove the blood-red iron oxide mud that once covered them and which stains. This good sized small cabinet display specimen is perfect for handling too and has an especially beautiful botryoidal texture. Ex Malcolm Southwood Collection, no MS 2017.011, there is no more specific provenance details other than the West Cumberland Iron Field. There is a small patch of white paint/Tippex on the base where a number appears to have been covered but this does not detract from its lovely form.
