Hematite
Unknown Owner
Nice British classic showing a smooth botryoidal lustrous kidney ore hematite specimen. In very good condition.Egremont, located in the West Cumberland iron ore district of Cumbria, England, is world-famous for its prolific production of high-grade hematite and exceptional mineral specimens. Geologically, the deposits consist of massive replacement bodies and veins of hematite hosted within Carboniferous Limestone, where iron-rich hydrothermal fluids altered the host rock along faults and fractures. The ore is noted for its purity and variety of habits, most notably the botryoidal "kidney ore" and the brilliant, metallic "specularite." Historically, while small-scale mining existed since Roman times, the mid-19th century industrial revolution triggered a massive boom, with several large mines like the Florence and Ullcoats operations becoming major industrial hubs. The peak of mining activity occurred between the 1880s and the early 20th century, providing essential raw materials for the British steel industry. Although most commercial iron extraction ceased by the late 20th century, with the famous Florence Mine finally closing in 2007.
