A very showy cabinet specimen of Goethite, var. Wood Iron from the famous Restormel Royal Iron mine in Cornwall. The wood-like banded Goethite forms a 11 mm wide botryoidal layer completely overgrown by finely crystalline Quartz which is itself coated with hard black botryoidal manganese oxides which at this mine are usually Cryptomelane. The layers continue throughout the whole specimen. A really nice displayable piece with the addition of the rarer manganese oxides that are occasionally seen from the mine. An old typed label (no. 40) is attached to the specimen, but it is unclear what collection this relates to.
