When I first picked-up this impressive cluster of three amber-colored crystals, my immediate reaction was, 'Wow, look at these Fluorites'. In short order, I had doubts; and sure enough these are actually some of the great Indian pseudocubic style of Calcites uncommonly found within zeolite pockets of the Deccan Plateau. Most people might see them head-on, and get a wrong first impression, because of the cubic shape. Actually, they are calcite rhombohedra, distorted, and with subtle edge modifications and patterning that you can see better in person. But they LOOK like sharp yellow cubes - it just happens to be a rare style of calcite growth. The two largest crystals are 4.5 cm on edge, with a rich amber color, gemmy interior, and high luster. Good quality Calcites from India are highly sought after for their beauty and quality, made even more desirable that you simply don't find many of them. On top of that, these are large, pseudocubic Calcites, which are rare no matter what the locality. This is an excellent and aesthetic specimen that brings distinct elegance and rarity with it, and pops with both geometry and with color in a case. A 1 in 10,000 specimen among Calcites from the otherwise productive finds in India's Deccan basalt deposits.
