This is a beautiful old time morganite crystal from the Pala District of California. The crystal has a rich pink color, and a vibrant luster. Two generations of growth have given this crystal a nicely concentric form. Small tourmalines and multiple veils occlude the center of the crystal, which is in turn surrounded by gemmy Morganite. Slender prisms of schorl and tabular blades of albite are seen gently contacting the rim of the crystal, beautifully rounding out the mineral associations. An important aspect of this specimen is its significant provenance. The specimen retains an old label from the Irénée du Pont mineral collection now a part of the University of Delaware collection, as well as a label from Arthur Montgomery. The Arthur Montgomery label is notated by J. Greiger. This may refer to John M. Greiger, a prominent California mineral dealer in the 1930’s and 1940’s. Overall, a beautiful and historic specimen. There is one area at the top right of the crystal where another crystal apparently grew against this one, but the contact does not interfere with the display face of the morganite.
