A very rare and rich large cabinet example of this American classic from the actual original mine development, dating it to the late 1800s. Franklinite crystals cover the display face and the underside of this impressive piece from the historic and renowned Franklin Furnace Mine at Franklin, New Jersey. While octahedral Franklinite are common enough, particularly from some later finds, this is special: the perfectly formed, 0.5 to 3.1 cm, charcoal-black, sub-metallic Franklinite crystals are dominated by octahedral faces, however, there are at least two other form modifications making the crystals geometrically interesting. The largest crystal sits prominently at the apex of the piece and then there is another rather large crystal off to one side and there are several other larger crystals on the front and the back. The piece is very hefty as it is all Franklinite. The crystals are in generally good condition although several have some minor damage, not important in overall context and impact. This is a hefty, imposing specimen and an important historic piece.
