This is a historic classic from the late 1800s or early 1900s finds at Laurium: an attractive Smithsonite miniature from the well-known Hilarion Mine in Lavrion, Greece. It is composed of lustrous, translucent green, Smithsonite clusters of tiny crystals stacked upon one another for great aesthetic composition. The color is reminiscent of the best Prehnite or Arkansas Wavellite and in fact we did a double take when we realized what this was! The stacked and side-by-side clusters are moderately well isolated and all of them are very near 1 cm in diameter. The green spheres are so translucent that they darken around the edges from the Goethite matrix for wonderful effect. Minor spots of damage, acceptable given its century-plus age and overall beauty otherwise. It's a beautifully composed and balanced piece that is an exceptional miniature from Lavrion.
