Quartz with Hematite

Unknown Owner
a scepter grouping of glassy gemmy quartz crystals with attractive red inclusions of hematite. In super condition all around. The crystals are very lustrous and sharp. The Orange River region in the Northern Cape of South Africa, particularly near the border with Namibia, is world-famous for producing highly aesthetic quartz crystals with vivid hematite inclusions. Geologically, these specimens occur in primary hydrothermal veins within the ancient metamorphic and igneous basement rocks of the Namaqua Metamorphic Province. As silica-rich fluids crystallized into quartz, fluctuating levels of iron oxide were introduced, trapping fine particles of hematite as "phantoms" or cloud-like inclusions within the growing crystals. This process results in the striking orange, red, and deep brown hues that define the locality. Unlike industrial mines with formal corporate structures, these specimens are primarily recovered through small-scale, artisanal mining efforts and surface prospecting along the rugged river valley. Significant discovery and distribution of these "Orange River Quartz" specimens began to accelerate in the late 1980s and 1990s, continuing to the present day as a consistent source for the international mineral market.
