Hambergite is a rare beryllium borate with hydroxyl that seems to be more common in the granite pegmatites of the Hindu Kush region of Pakistan and Afghanistan, and to some lesser extent Madagascar, than anywhere else. Strangely given other minerals and mineral combinations we see in Pakistan and Madagascar, it has yet to be reported in Brazil. This large, 7.2 cm, lustrous, translucent, white, distinctly twinned crystal is from the a single small 2009 discovery in the famous gem district of Antsirabe. It is a translucent, ghostly-white, and very lustrous in a dramatic shape. It has detail accents from vertical striations. Each item was specially chosen, or unique, compared to other examples of any particular species. In this case, The stark white ghostly color and the twinning set it apart from most others. This exceptional hambergite crystal shows that kind of long-play discipline, and is reflected in the species examples in his collection. This is uncommon from the tourmaline pegmatites in Madagascar and the location is part of the reason why Paul grabbed it when this came out: large crystals are uncommon from any locality, in fact. There is a complex twin system here, but it is difficult to describe. Paul Stahl's collection was noted for the breadth and depth of species represented, rarities in particular; and he would never add something merely representative. From the collection of Madagascar expert Dr. Federico Pezzotta, we purchased this in 2009; and then sold to Paul Stahl (he had a trigger finger, and bought it within minutes!).
