A grouping of non-lustrous cubic galena crystals without matrix. This is in good condition with very minimal micro-damage present. Very nice for this old locality, Ray collected the specimen in 1956.New Diggins in Lafayette County, Wisconsin, is part of the Upper Mississippi Valley mining district and was an important early lead mining area developed in the 1820s. The discovery of lead ore attracted miners to the region and contributed to one of the first mineral rushes in the United States. Mining focused on galena found in shallow deposits within Ordovician limestone and dolomite, worked through small shafts and surface diggings.
