Calcite with Barite
Unknown Owner
Gorgeous pink crystallized calcite across the top of a hematite rich matrix. In good condition with great color. This is classic material for this locality. The specimen comes with a previous label from Harvard University as shown at the end of the video. The Montreal Mine in Iron County, Wisconsin, was an underground iron mine in the Gogebic Range that was developed in the late 1800s to exploit hematite iron ore in Precambrian rocks. It became one of the important iron producers in the region during the early 20th century and supported the nearby town of Montreal. Mining operations declined after World War II, and the mine closed in 1962. Today the site is part of the historic iron mining heritage of northern Wisconsin.
