Tanzanite, the gem variety of zoisite, is a rare and highly-valued gem mineral that is/was found only in the Merelani Hills of Tanzania. Sharp crystals are treasured by collectors but also often cut up for the gem rough within. Dominantly purple due to the presence of vanadium, this GEMMY, gorgeous 62 gram crystal has a perfect color mix of blue, purple and red colors (a natural color palette). The intensity of all colors is strong, particularly for a crystal of this size. The blue/purple/red colors demonstrate the trichroic nature of the tanzanite as you light up each axis of the crystal by moving light around it. Crystals that have been heat-treated (standard, in the gem trade; and often done with crystals in the sorting and triage process) yield a uniform blue color, but this stone maintains all three colors, and the vivid red along the c-axis is a particularly good indicator that the crystal is natural. It was saved for us by one of our direct sources, before treatment. Also, notably, this has no repair or restoration. This is a fantastic, NATURAL crystal in the size class with razor sharp form; and showing the choice combination of colors and gemminess that makes this rare gemstone so desirable.
