The region of Daye/Huangshi in Hubei, China has seen 3 significant finds of world-class calcite, first in 2005 with pink calcites from the Fengjiashan Mine followed by later finds of larger pink calcites at Tonglushan; and the second very recently around 2023 with these amazing finds in nearby Tonglushan Mine (Daye). This FANTASTIC, small-cabinet piece is from this modern discovery and came out in 2023-24, as a big plate which we trimmed down. It has such aesthetics, balance, and a mix of subtle characters that elevate the piece to something really special, even among a find of others. There are two distinct generations of calcites, the first being gemmy, razor-sharp scalenohedrons up to about 1.8 cm. Lying across this matrix is a magnificent, 7 cm, GEMMY calcite that is an unusually-tabular, twinned scalenohedron. It presents perfectly face-forward; and all of the calcites have a light dusting of red hematite along the edges that makes the aesthetics even better. And if sheer beauty wasn't enough, the calcites fluoresce orange-red, with the large crystal being particularly sensitive and bright. This is a great calcite specimen, comparable with many top, world-wide specimens of the species from more common localities. At about once a decade, this region does not give up so many major finds of calcite. We have seen many in China on the ground, and bought very few.
