Sought-after tanzanite, a blue-purple variety of zoisite, is found almost exclusively in the Merelani Hills of Tanzania. Other colors are rare, and due to combinations of formation and trace elements. Combinations of two colors, yellow and blue/purple, are rare still. This 50 gram crystal has a sharp and unusual strong color demarcation, with the lower 2/3 being a deep purple-blue and the upper third is yellow. The rich color masks just how gemmy the interior really is, with backlighting showing both the gemminess of the crystal and wisps of translucence floating inside. There are two areas of contacting, but most of the faces and the termination have very high luster. This is a good, robust example of bi-colored tanzanite. One rarely sees such strong yellow/blue zoning within one crystal. It is not transparent, but it is translucent; and this makes the color more intense actually. From a small find of 2025.
