A competition-level large thumbnail of superior quality and visual impact: a single gorgeous gem crystal, this choice, large thumbnail specimen is from the Uchucchacua Mine, one of the two finest rhodochrosite localities in Peru, and certainly known worldwide. A modified scalenohedron, as many from here are, the cherry-red crystal has spectacular luster and is gemmy-to-translucent. Backlighting creates a beautiful and variable glow, and considering how large this single is, it would be fair to say that this is a significant and unusual rhodo. It came out in a few small finds dating to the early 1980s. Nothing of this magnitude has been seen since, from this famous silver mine. Aside from the rhodochrosites from China, which are completely different, and the rhombohedrons from Sweet Home, this specimen ranks highly for size and color among the few other locations in the world to produce sparkling and lustrous crystals.
