Unknown Owner
Very choice lustrous crystals of barite to 4.3 cm in size, these dusted with hematite, set up on a breccia matrix. Slight damage present as seen, still very nice.Egremont in Cumbria, England, is a historic mining area best known for iron ore extraction from hematite deposits in Carboniferous limestone. Mining in the region was active for several centuries and became especially important during the 19th century. In addition to iron ore, the district has produced a variety of mineral specimens from veins and cavities. Barite occurs at Egremont as fine crystals, often associated with calcite and other minerals in the host rock. Specimens from the area are of interest to collectors for their crystal form and classic association with this well known mining district.
