Sulfur

Unknown Owner
A gorgeous grouping of mostly gemmy lustrous native sulfur crystals without matrix. Very attractive. some micro-chipping present, overall in good condition.Mining in the Agrigento region of Sicily was historically focused on large sulfur deposits found in sedimentary rocks of the island. Production expanded during the 19th century when Sicily became one of the worlds leading sources of sulfur used for chemical and industrial purposes. Numerous underground mines extracted native sulfur from evaporite deposits along with associated minerals such as gypsum and calcite. Mining declined during the 20th century as cheaper sulfur sources became available, but the region remains known for its historic sulfur mining industry.
