Almost velvety botryoidal goethite across the top of matrix. In great condition. This was collected in the 1950s.The Mather B Mine near Negaunee in Marquette County, Michigan was part of the Marquette Iron Range, one of the earliest and most important iron mining districts in the United States. The mine was developed in the late 19th century to extract hematite ore from Precambrian banded iron formation. Underground workings supplied iron ore for the expanding steel industry around the Great Lakes. Operations later declined as higher grade deposits were exhausted and iron mining in the region shifted to other methods and locations.
