Copper
Unknown Owner
A very choice example of a crystallized copper skull from this famous mining district. In great condition. Classic stuff for this area.Copper skull specimens come from the Keweenaw Peninsula, Michigan, a region famous for native copper deposits hosted in basalt flows and conglomerates. These unusual specimens formed when native copper filled cavities or replaced organic material in the rock, sometimes producing shapes that resemble small skull like forms. Mining in the district began in the mid 19th century and made the area one of the worlds most important sources of native copper. Such specimens are prized by collectors for their unusual appearance and connection to the historic Michigan copper mines.
