Marcasite
Unknown Owner
Lustrous golden platy crystals of marcasite across the top of matrix. In good condition. Collected in 1998.The Groveland Mine in Dickinson County, Michigan was part of the Menominee Iron Range in the Upper Peninsula, a major iron mining district developed in the late 19th century. The mine worked iron ore from Precambrian banded iron formation using underground mining methods typical of the region. Production supplied ore to iron and steel industries around the Great Lakes during the peak years of iron mining. Like many mines in the district, operations eventually declined as ore reserves were depleted and mining shifted to other deposits.
