Goethite
Unknown Owner
A wonderful example of botryoidal lustrous goethite with little matrix. In super condition and very fine for this locality. At one time the specimen was part of the collection at the SeamanMuseum at Michigan Tech University. The Jackson Mine at Negaunee, Michigan was the first major iron mine developed on the Marquette Iron Range in the Upper Peninsula. Iron ore was discovered there in 1844 and mining began soon afterward, marking the start of large scale iron production in the region. The mine worked hematite ore from Precambrian banded iron formation and helped establish the Marquette district as an important supplier of iron for the growing steel industry. Operations continued for many years before the mine eventually closed as mining expanded to other deposits in the range.
