Calcite
Unknown Owner
Neat locality example with colorless translucent lustrous crystals of calcite measuring to 1.0 cm in size across the top of an iron rich matrix. In good condition. At one time the specimen was part of the Seaman Mineral Museum at Michigan Tech University. The Vulcan Mine in Dickinson County, Michigan was part of the Menominee Iron Range in the Upper Peninsula, a major iron mining district developed in the late 19th century. The mine worked iron ore from Precambrian banded iron formation using underground mining methods common in the region. Production supported the growing iron and steel industry around the Great Lakes during the peak years of mining. Like many operations in the district, the Vulcan Mine eventually closed as high grade ore deposits were depleted.
