Sulfur on Aragonite
Bright yellow, bipyramidal crystals of sulfur highlight this very fine, cabinet-size piece from the Cianciana sulphur mines in Sicily. To be important, these must have this yellow on white contrast, which makes the color pop out to the eye. Ranging in size up to an impressive 3.3 cm, the translucent-to-gemmy crystals are quite clean and have good luster. They display well on a matrix of crystalline aragonite, which also has a attractive, soft-pink fluorescence. Interestingly, the cores of the sulfur crystals exhibit a green fluorescence, which is both unusual and intriguing. This is an excellent and aesthetic specimen that well-represents this group of mines, which produced some of Sicily's finest sulfur specimens from 1840-1962. This is a cabinet sized example of an important old classic - literally one of the most important from an economic perspective as well as a collector perspective. Since these mines were worked for commercial sulfur (think: gunpowder!), most was destroyed. Relatively few specimens were saved from this rich and unique deposit. Specimens of this overall size and style, in a reasonable price range (such as it is), are very hard to come by today. Also, the piece is, for such a soft and fragile species of crystal, in amazing and near pristine condition.
