Beryl (variety emerald) in black phlogopite schist, 10.8 cm, from the Takovaya River emerald deposit, 45 km northeast of Ekaterinburg (now Sverdlovsk), Ural Mountains, Russia. Emeralds were first found there in 1830 by a local peasant named Maksim Koshevnikov, in the roots of a tree that had been toppled in a storm. This specimen was probably in Tiffany’s stock in 1919 and was later acquired by du Pont.
