Calcite with Chalcopyrite
From a unique and surprising find of around 2020, this is a sculptural pair of doubly terminated calcite crystals aesthetically attached to a third, doubly-terminated calcite that is almost completely covered in chalcopyrite crystals from the Fletcher Mine in Reynolds County, Missouri. The glassy, translucent to transparent amber crystals measure 10.9 and 9 cm, respectively; and the longer one actually has well-developed, bifurcated terminations that show distinct phantoms. These phantoms are accentuated by a fine-grained sulfide mineral (maybe more chalcopyrite) within, and the opposing end shows this as well. The gemmy tips enable us to see the phantoms at both ends very well. The adjacent, shorter crystal is paler in color and and shows a phantom, but it is less prominent and displays the contact from where it was attached in the pocket. The third crystal projects at a strong diagonal at the top, measures 7.7 cm in length and displays a coarse druse of 1 to 2.5 mm, iridescent chalcopyrite crystals that just glisten. There is one contact on this crystal. This is a well composed and showy piece from a special pocket with unique combinatorial aesthetics like we had not seen yet since mining started producing specimens here in the 1980s! Comes with a custom engraved acrylic base.
