Calcite with Duftite
The association of Calcite crystals with Duftite (a rare lead copper arsenate hydroxide species) is iconic Tsumeb mine. Whether the Duftite forms inclusions within, or as coatings upon the Calcite, this combination is just never seen anywhere else on Earth in such spectacular forms. This very large (15.5 x 13.8 cm) display-worthy plate of large (to over 3.5 cm on edge) intergrown rhombic cream-coloured Calcite crystals is in stunning condition, and would as 'just' Calcite make a really fine display piece from Tsumeb. But, with the addition of thin coatings of mossy-green Duftite, which is preferentially concentrated on particular orientations of Calcite crystal faces, this elevates this specimen to a higher level of rarity. The dappling of green Duftite in the centre of some Calcite faces, highlights that these rhombic crystals are not just simple rhombs, but are more complex, with internal 'stepping'. A fascinating, and highly displayable Tsumeb classic. Ex Hettrich Collection.
