Calcite
Unknown Owner
The colour of this Calcite from Tsumeb mine is really unusual and striking, especially its intensity and uniformity throughout the crystals. I have to be honest and state that I am uncertain what mineral, or chemical element it is that is providing the orange-red colour, but it is most likely either Hematite (iron oxide) or Cuprite (copper oxide) inclusions. The specimen is itself a small cabinet-sized plate of Calcite crystals all of which present a fine glossy lustre. Their form is complex, with one or two showing the development of the three-sided 'nail-head' termination. Ex Hettrich Collection.
