Amazonite with Cleavelandite
This dramatic, large cabinet piece is from, the famous Icon Pocket at the Smoky Hawk claim in Colorado! This pocket was collected live on television and is one of the few truly high-level named pockets. This specimen was long held back, and later sold to us by Tim Dorris. Most people are familiar with the exceptional contemporary combinations of smoky quartz and amazonite being found by the hard-working Dorris family in these rugged mountains. Some of their finds exceed all previous examples of the classic smoky quartz and amazonite combinations and this one is a gorgeous cluster of large, richy colored amazonite crystals with some accessory albite var. cleavelandite and a trace of smoky quartz. The aptly named "Icon Pocket", shown being collected on TV in the 2015 season of "The Prospectors" show, is something else entirely, with unique pieces of large blue Amazonite crystals of the ideal color perched dramatically on white albite matrix (instead of on the usual nest of rocky matrix of quartz). The contrast and the coloration makes this pocket exceptional and notable. This particular piece is largely composed of two larger and two smaller, blocky, green-blue crystals of amazonite with the largest crystal measuring 9.6 cm tall and 5.5 cm wide and is doubly terminated (the lower termination is largely obscured by the albite at the base). The specimen has a few repairs, typical and acceptable for the material as long as they are cleanly prepared (and this work was done by Tim Dorris himself in the family prep lab). The crystals are arranged aesthetically so that the piece has an unusually dramatic balance and presentation. It has tremendous visual impact with vibrant color and great geometry. It can be seen from across the room!
