Cavansite is abundant in small samples, small specimens...this is true. However, for overall composition, balance, poise, contrast, and sheer color all, this is one of the finest thumbnails we have seen since following the early finds from the 1990s. I love the species and have paid close attention to it since the 90s, and probably owned 200 thumbnails or more by now. But this would be one of my top two. It just has an impact and style that lifts it up above others, of this particular habit, to my eyes as somebody who prizes the ultimate refinement in a competition-level thumbnail specimen of some of the more common species. It is easy to find a great cavansite thumbnail; but it is more challenging to find one that is an 11 on a scale of 10, and everything about this piece makes it so, taken in aggregate. The sphere of crystals atop is 2 cm across, making this a full-sized thumbnail. It is complete all around, no damage. The color is top percentile, hot neon blue, almost metallic. It looks good in any moderate light, while some cavansites need strong lights. There is dull cavansite and sparkly cavansite...and this is the ultimate level of the sparkly lustrous style. This is from a small pocket found in 2024, one of the probable last great pockets from the famous location. We saw videos during the Dallas Mineral Collecting Symposium, filmed by Kulin Pandey onsite at Wagholi in early 2025. He showed us that there are only 80 meters or so of blue-infused cliff where cavansite might be found, in this mine that has been worked for 30 years and more already. The main deposit is simply almost gone, and the other side of the quarry is being used for landfill and garbage disposal. It was, honestly, depressing to see but this is reality - great localities, they come and they go.
